Safe and robust: thermal monitoring of lithium-ion batteries

If a lithium-ion battery is damaged or handled improperly, this can lead to a thermal runaway, in which the battery heats up very strongly. Thermal changes in the production process of lithium-ion batteries that are not recognised or are recognised late can have serious consequences. The potential consequences include short circuits, overheating, fires and even explosions. A burning battery in the production process within the conveyor system or even within a machine that is difficult to access means that fire extinguishing measures often disrupt and often damage large parts of the production infrastructure – resulting in extended production downtimes.
VisionTools presents the innovative solution with an infrared thermographic camera for automated hotspot monitoring in battery production. This system is installed at all neuralgic manufacturing steps in the production process and now continuously monitors the battery product to be manufactured for hotspots and local temperature anomalies. These parameters can be used to reliably detect a thermal defect in the battery cell and prevent a fire or thermal runaway of the battery in good time. Our solution includes a complete system with a high-quality VoE thermal imaging camera that guarantees excellent performance and precise temperature measurements.
A variety of evaluation methods are available, which can be customised to the production processes. A thermal change from 2° Kelvin in the cell can be detected. Impending malfunctions can be recognised at an early stage and fires within a system can be prevented by ejecting the product from the production process.
